StrongStart Program

StrongStart is a free drop-in early learning program for children aged 0 to 5 years (prior to entry into kindergarten), who are accompanied by their parents or caregivers. It is the beginning of a special partnership between families and schools.

More information can be found under Programs and Services on the School or District website. Click here:

The program at Peter Greer is facilitated by Helga Helgason, a Licenced Early Childhood Educator.  Currently, Teacher Helga is on a leave until further notice.  Please welcome our relief facilitator Suzanne Chavarie.

2020-2021 School Year

Dear StrongStart families,

We are excited to welcome you back to StrongStart Centres to learn with you and your children. We take many safety precautions to ensure your quality experience. Pre-registering families for five-week rotations is part of these precautions.

To ensure your place in the next available rotation, you must fill out the Request to Attend StrongStart Form

Rotations are currently attending a five-week session. We are planning the next rotation from the waiting list of people who already completed forms.

Once you are placed within a rotation, your StrongStart Facilitator will contact you to give you exact schedules and procedures.

Please note that you may fill out a request to attend StrongStart at more than one Centre. Some of our centres may have more availability than others. However, please do not attend more than one StrongStart Centre during the same five-week rotation. Our goal is to provide StrongStart experiences to all families in a safe and equitable manner. We will offer families a second five-week rotation after we schedule all families who requested to attend.

If you have any questions, please contact Jan Nicholls at 250-860-8888.

StrongStart BC Information for Parents and Guardians

Use these suggestions to get the most out of your experience in a StrongStart BC program:

  • Introduce yourself to the StrongStart BC facilitator and help your child introduce themselves.
  • Sign in and out every day that you attend.
  • Allow your child to observe an activity or group experience before participating.
  • Help your child learn by experience – teach them to help themselves, interact with others independently and create using their own ideas. Only offer assistance or instruction when necessary, like when your child uses something for the first time or needs help resolving a conflict.
  • Offer to write down your child’s words to describe the pictures they create.
  • Ask your child open ended questions about their experiences.
  • Acknowledge your child’s effort and offer encouragement frequently – especially after a disappointment.
  • Relax, learn and have fun with your child and other families.

Complete a registration form when you first attend the program with your child. Please also be prepared to provide legal proof of identification for your child – this includes:

  • Any type of vital statistics document like a birth certificate
  • Identification issued by Immigration Canada (e.g. passport, visa, permanent resident card)
  • An Indigenous Status card

Be sure to check in with the facilitator as soon as you arrive at the StrongStart BC program – they can assist with this process and answer any questions you might have.
