École Peter Greer is proud to partner with the Okanagan Indian Band (OKIB) and UBC Okanagan on a salmon stewardship project that brings learning about our local lands and waterways into our school.
Through the project, students help care for salmon fry at the school before they are released into a local waterway in the spring. This hands-on learning connects with the broader Syilx Okanagan work to restore salmon to the Okanagan and provides students with opportunities to learn about the important relationship between salmon, water, land, and people.
As part of this learning, on November 18 and 19, 2026, we will hold our Time of the Red Salmon (sk̕əlwistən) Celebration and Feast. Over the two days, students and staff will have an opportunity to gather, learn, and enjoy a variety of salmon preparations — along with a fun “faux salmon” option made from watermelon!
The celebration will provide students with opportunities to learn about the importance of salmon to the Syilx Okanagan people, the history of salmon in the Okanagan, and ongoing efforts to restore salmon to local waterways. Students will also explore the connections between salmon, healthy waterways, stewardship of the land, and our responsibilities to the places where we live and learn.
Syilx Knowledge Keepers help guide our learning and deepen students’ understanding of salmon and the waterways of these lands. The project reflects our ongoing commitment to reconciliation through learning, environmental stewardship, and strengthening relationships with our local community.
